Memorial Day doesn't feel like a holiday.

Not in the way Labor Day does - with its cookouts and the unofficial end of summer. Not even like Independence Day, with its fireworks and flags. Memorial Day carries a different weight. It feels more like a sacred observance. A moment of collective stillness in a noisy world. A day that asks something of us rather than giving something to us.

And somewhere along the way, we let the barbecue override the moment.

We're not here to shame anyone for celebrating. Joy is its own kind of gratitude. But this year, we want to invite families to add one simple, powerful tradition to their Memorial Day gathering: **the Fallen Soldier Table.**

Also called the Missing Man Table, this military tradition has been honored in mess halls and military dining rooms for decades. It's a small table, set for one, that speaks volumes. Every item on it carries meaning — the white tablecloth for purity of service, the single red rose for blood shed and families left behind, the inverted goblet for those who will never raise a toast again, the lemon and salt for the bitter tears of grief, the lit candle for the enduring hope that one day all may come home.

Set one at your picnic table this Monday. It doesn't have to be elaborate. A small folding table off to the side. A white cloth, a rose from your yard, a candle. Then gather your kids around it and tell them what it means.

Tell them that Memorial Day exists because real people - with names, with families, with whole lives ahead of them, chose to stand between us and harm's way. And some of them didn't come back.

That's the conversation worth having at the cookout.

Today, we pause to honor the 13 U.S. soldiers who gave their lives on August 26, 2021, during the Abbey Gate attack at Hamid Karzai International Airport.

In the final days of the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan, these brave men and women were carrying out a mission of compassion - helping evacuate civilians to safety under unimaginable pressure and danger.

A homicide bombing tragically took them from us, but their courage and sacrifice will live on forever.
